Coaching or Therapy?

Before we can choose the right type of coaching, we need to agree that you need coaching, rather than therapy or counselling. If you are suffering from long term, serious emotional issues such as bereavement, then therapy or counselling are indicated. Therapy and counselling are both 'away from' techniques, seeking to move you away from the historical negative experience, but by definition always referencing that negative experience.

On the other hand, coaching (and NLP) are 'going towards' techniques always focused on a future, desired, positive goal that has not yet been experienced. Some practitioners seem to be attempting 'couching', a blurring of counselling and coaching. I never would. I am not a therapist or counsellor. I would always refer a client to a trained therapist or counsellor when necessary.
